40 minutes in Benque Viejo del Carmen

Luckily for us here in Belize, Tropical Storm Ernesto has, for the most part, completely passed us by.... for now, anyway.
I guess I was prepared to be hanging out in our temporary, makeshift hurricane shelter (our bathroom) all afternoon, but now I get to post stuff and not be in fear that my house is going to blow away, and I can use the truck battery to charge my things!

Before I came home to wait for the storm with Trip and the pets yesterday, I took a quick bus ride (about an hour and twenty minutes) from Belmopan to Benque Viejo del Carmen, just to check it out.

Benque is "the furthest west sizable settlement in Belize," and lies along the Mopan River, which forms the border of Guatemala:

Recreational Center? Just felt like a nice park to me.

Looks like a cute little resort over there... I think I may need to go visit sometime soon....

If you ever visit Benque, the one and only recommendation I was able to pick up for you in the short amount of time I spent there is to stop for lunch at Vicky's, right across the street from where the bus will drop you off - my stewed chicken with rice and beans, fried plantains and pasta salad was only $6bz ($3us) and it was one of the best plates of stewed chicken I've had in the country.

  1. Have you been to the shady bars between the Belize and Guat border? They are called Champon...or something like that. Bizarre. And worth a trip!

  2. Thanks for the recommendation of Vicky's! We will make sure to stop in for stew chicken and rice & beans if we make it to Benque again. HUGE food for little cost!

  3. I've been to one of those whorehouses, oops I mean BARS...bring your own toilet paper and be prepared to hover if you need the facilities, as one often does in those types of places! LOL!
