To Dread or Not to Dread... That is the Question

I've been thinking about dreading my hair again for years... but I've been too afraid to commit to it.

I had gross, dirty, messy ones when I was in high school, and when I decided I didn't want them anymore my sister and I spent a good 4 hours ripping them apart. Our hands were literally covered in black, greasy filth- like how they get after you pet a dirty outdoor dog for a while.

Now I know better, and I think I'd be able to keep them clean and looking good.... but the whole process of getting them started is a pain in the ass and I'd probably hate them for the first 6-12 months.

Straightening my hair here in Belize is pretty pointless, and my curls can end up a huge, tangled, frizzy mess because of the sea breeze and humidity...

I am the worst decision maker EVER.

Feel free to give an opinion.

Napping

Is there, like, a secret to napping?

I'd like to take a nap right now- I have an hour before I have to be at work and I could really, really use a little sleep before I go in.... but I am not a good napper.

My mind won't shut up fast enough to allow me to just crash out for a half an hour or so. I'll spend that whole time lying there, thinking about how many minutes I have until I have to get up, or I'll think about what I have to do when I get up, or about my life (what do I want to do, where do I want to be,  etc)
Then, before I know it, the alarm is going off and I didn't sleep for a second.

It usually takes me, I'd say, at least an hour to fall asleep.... so if I want to even try to take a nap, i have to have almost a 2 hour time frame to do it.

I need nap lessons.

How many times can I change my mind?

I have about 10 days left to decide wether I want to stay in San Pedro and take one of the bar jobs I've been offered.... or to move to Placencia and see what I can get into there.... or do what I was originally supposed to do- go live a simple life in Alta Vista with my husband.

This is why I miss my friends, it's usually easier to make a decision after I can bitch about everything and get some honest feedback.

I'm pretty sure I want to leave San Pedro... this is definately where I should stay if I just want to work and make money... but anyone that knows me knows that I value my free time way more than I value money. I'd have to go back to working 6 days a week if I want to pay rent and eat, plus my heart isn't in San Pedro. Great place to visit and hang out, but it isn't where I want to live forever... so why spend more time here?

Then again.... when I DO have free time here I get to go sailing and fishing, I go for long walks on the beach, and even though I don't have any " friends" here, Ive met a bunch of nice people and I've gotten kind of comfortable here.

My mind goes back and forth, like, 8,000 times a day about this.

If I live in Alta Vista I'll learn a lot- a lot about Belize, about solar power and wind energy, I'll have time to learn Spanish, how to live off the land...
Plus, I'll get puppies and have all the fresh, organic fruits and veggies I can possibly stuff myself with, and I'll have my own little massage/yoga/meditation hut with a palapa roof in the jungle... And I'll learn wether or not I can stay married.

I guess I should feel lucky that this is my biggest issue right now. Where, in Belize, I should live.

Any suggestions?

Just a quick Hello from Placencia

This is a pain in the ass to do from an iPod touch, just so ya know.

I left San Pedro yesterday morning and found myself in the co-pilot seat on my first flight from San Pedro to the Belize City Municipal Airport. The co-pilot seat!! With no camera!! Damn those thieves!!!!

Of course, on this trip down to Placencia, I've seen a million things I wish I could take a picture of- but alas, no camera.

I checked into Julia's Guest House- private cabanas on the beach for $60us per night- they each have a little kitchen area, a bed and a bathroom, and a hammock out on the veranda. Perfect. I was lounging on my hammock when one of the other guests- Bob from West Virginia- walked by and offered me some of his home made rum punch. He's a nice old man, and makes some tasty punch!! I was sufficiently buzzed in about an hour.

The last time I was here, I had perfect weather with a super warm, clear Caribbean Sea, and there were starfish and dragonflies everywhere. Yesterday and today were both really windy, and there are actually waves in the sea, stirring up all the sand and making it look just a little less beautiful than usual. It's actually been a bit chilly! (79•F)

It's so pretty here, and it's way smaller and chilled out than San Pedro.... but i have a complaint- no one cleans up the beaches!! I shouldnt say "no one," some of the resorts rake up their own beach areas- but most of the beach is just covered in litter being spit out by the sea. It's sad. And gross.

It must be a pretty daunting task to keep up with since it has to be done every single day.... but ya'd think the people who live here would want to pitch in to help keep this tiny little place clean. I dunno.

Well I just got back from having a surprisingly tasty cheese steak from the Cozy Corner... and I believe it's time for a nap.

I got robbed! :(

I woke up this morning and noticed my laptop was missing....
Then I noticed that my wallet was on my kitchen table, and I know I had left it in my purse..... checked it, cash is gone.
Checked my purse, camera is gone.
Kindle is gone, too.
Ug.

Now I've officially "experienced San Pedro!"

I was planning on leaving soon anyway, so maybe this is a sign that my decision to move is the right thing to do.

Arrrrg. I don't know what botheres me more- that my "stuff" is gone, that I was robbed WHILE I WAS HOME, or the fact that I was sleeping naked and some theif possibly saw me while he was on his way out of my apartment with my stuff.

I kinda want to rip someones face off.... but at the same time, I'm just happy that I wasn't hurt.
To quote my friend Fiona, "At least they didn't touch your naked body!"

Things to do when you can't waste time online

I've been going through withdraw from not being able to get online at home for the past 2 days, but I managed a to find a few things to take my mind off of wanting to break into my neighbors house to reset the router while he was out.

  • Naps. I've always loved naps, and now I can just put a towel out on the balcony and get a little sunshine while I take a lil cat nap.

  • Walks. This is something I never would do at home in PA, unless I first drove to a park to get to a decent walking location. I can be on the beach from my apartment in about 3 minutes, and if I feel like maybe stopping for a few drinks I'll head north, and if I really just want to walk and have time to myself to think and enjoy the day alone, I'll go south. (There are still plenty of bars on the way down south, but they're mostly resort/hotel bars.)

  • Buying fruit and veggies and then figuring out what to do with them.  On almost every street here, you can find a fruit and veggie vendor, so I usually stop and just buy a tomato and cucumber to make a simple salad for dinner. Before my internet connection crapped out, though, I had been looking up natural skin care concoctions.... so on Friday I went to Esperanza's to see what I could load up on.  I ended up getting tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, apples, honey, coconut oil and an egg (Not all from Esperanza's) I'll post some of the recipes at the end of the blog.

  • Reading. God Bless whoever created the Kindle, fo'realz. In the past week I've read How to Travel Full Time by Colin Wright, Finding the Gypsy in Me- Tales of an International House Sitter by Teresa Roberts, The Truth about Cruise Ships - A Cruise Ship Officer Survives the Work, Adventure, Alcohol and Sex of Ship Life by Jay Herring, and Backpacked - A Reluctant Trip Across Central America by Catherine Ryan Howard. (Can you tell where my mind has been wandering off to lately?)

  • Annoying the cats. All you need is a string, a trash ball and one or more cats, and you have yourself hours and hours of furry entertainment. Just watch out for claws.

Ridiculously Easy Cucumber Mask

Hello, 2012!! - aka - Thank you and goodbye, 2011!

Did you know that you can live on a tropical island and NOT put on a bathing suit for months at a time?! It's totally true!!

That is one of the things I learned in 2011.

Me, representin' the Flyers and NOT wearing a bathing suit

I've also learned that gossip spreads like wildfire on an island, you should always carry a "sweat rag" with you, the Guatemalan purses bleed color all over your clothes, Belize isn't for everyone, prices are negotiable on just about everything, you need to "know people" to be able to get anything important done in a reasonable amount of time, bringing a cat into the country illegally is much cheaped than doing it by the books, being hissed at is more annoying than being whistled at, and it's sad when a nice tourist leaves town.

I'm also learning about really being homesick. (That must be what it is when I burst out in tears after talking to my family back home, right?)

Other than that.... I've learned that I'm really ok with spending lots of time alone and San Pedro is too big for me. There are too many people, too many options, too much traffic (Traffic? On an island? Yuck!) I have also become exceptionally good at navigating my way around puddles, avoiding getting my feet and flip-flops drenched.

2012 will bring even more changes for me. (And that sentence just reminded me to check my horoscope on astrologyzone.com)

    The Village Inn, Placencia

Anyway... all I know for sure about 2012 is that I'll be living on the mainland, somewhere, until May 15th. Everything after that.... well I have no idea, but I'm pretty stoked to find out!

Happy New Year to everyone!!!
