About Me

6 July 1014
Hi - I'm Carrie.

I'm originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and I moved to Belize on May 1, 2011 after visiting and exploring the country about 6 different times in 3 years.

I lived in the jungle of the Stann Creek district for almost a year before coming back to the island - some of that time was spent in an unfinished house with no running water or electricity. Some of my best blogging was done from the jungle - I found life to be way more interesting over there.

My original plans didn't quite work out since I've been here and now I'm just kind of rolling with what life gives me and have no idea what my future holds.... but Belize is definitely my home base for a while. Unless, you know, some kind of amazing offer comes up and I need to move to, like, Fiji or somewhere awesome.

You can follow me on Facebook, Pintrest, and Instagram by clinking on one of the icons at the top of my page. I haven't bothered to figure out Twitter yet... but I guess I'll have to, eventually.

  1. Hi Carrie!
My husband and I moved to the Corozal area in May of this year. And believe it or not, I'm originally from Bucks County, PA, too. Talk about a small world. Where in Bucks Co. did you live?

  3. Hi Carrie

I'm Mark from Frederick Maryland. I guess you know where that is. ;) I just started checking out your blog ... from what I've seen so far it's great. I hope to visit Belize in 2013. That is ... unless our Mayan friends were right and the world ends December 2012.

    Take Care - Mark

    1. Hey Mark! Yes, I know where Frederick is - we were practically neighbors!
Where do you plan on visiting when you're down here?

      Thanks for saying hi!

    2. Wow, this world is too small (or karma is pulling me to Belize) I lived in Frederick Md for many years and worked in the fire/EMS field at several stations around Frederick County. I now live in Adams County Pa and I am a retired paramedic firefighter. My wife is a Rn working in the family birth field. We have been talking about where we want to go when our youngest gets out of school. Some of the places we have talked about are the Florida keys, USVI, Aruba and lastly Belize ( I have a strong need to attend camp Jerry Jeff Walker every year) I have shown my wife some photos and if the water is blue, warm and clean its good to her. I like the expat's in Belize and can't wait to get my SCUBA cert. I am wondering what the process is for a nurse in Belize is ( can someone from another country work in the nursing field) I'm looking forward to leaving the USA behind and starting another life. - Rob (Adams County Pa)

  4. Hi Carrie:

Sunday am ... and I've read some more of your blog. I must say it's a very good read. I like your style of writing - conversational, personal, insightful, and fun.

Since our (Mark and Theresa) vacation time is pretty much booked for earlier in the year it may not be until the 2nd half of 2013 before we will be able to visit Belize. I'd really like to get a feel for the whole country, so there is a lot that I'd like to see - The beach (of course), rainforests , towns, rivers, lagoons, Mayan sites, etc. In particalar I'd like to go to Hopkins, Palencia, Dangria, San Ignacio, etc. I'd even like to see Belize City and Belmopan though I hear they are really not where you'd want to hang out there that much. I'd like to explore and meet people - Belize may be the type of place I'd like to live someday ... we'll see.

    1. I'm so glad you enjoy reading my blog :) I've been slacking on posting regularly, but I'm going try to make it more of a priority.

Belmopan is a great city to visit! It's very mellow and easy to get around, and there are a ton of good places to eat and hang out. Belize City is sketchy... safe enough to walk around and explore a bit during the day time (if you know which neighborhoods to stay out of) but at night, I wouldn't be leaving my hotel room!
Everywhere else you mentioned is lovely and definitely worth checking out while you're down here.

Keep in touch and if you need any help or recommendations, or if the two of you would like to try to meet up, I'll be around!

  6. Carrie,
Great blog! Mark (above) had posted a link on the Belize Expats FB group page (thanks Mark!). I am originally from MD, lived in Florida for a few years, and I'm currently staying in....Bucks County, PA (Quakertown, to be exact). I've only been here for a couple of weeks (my husband is on a job assignment here for a few months). We purchased a piece of property at Sanctuary Belize, and have visited Placencia back in June 2012. We plan to return in January 2013 for another visit, and hope to explore Hopkins while we are there. Keep writing!!

    1. Hey Kellie! (And yes - thank you, Mark!)
How do you like Qtown?? I used to go to the QMart all the time back in high school - one of my friends had a car and, for some reason that I'm still not completely sure of, we'd all pile into her car on a Saturday morning and drive 45 minutes to go THERE.

I've seen pictures of Sanctuary Belize - it looks like a nice spot!
Hopkins is a great little town, I'm sure you'll love it.

      Thanks for sayin hi!

  8. Carrie,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I think it's great that you had the courage to just pack up and go, take a chance, and move somewhere as unique as Belize to get a fresh start.

I first visited San Pedro in November 2012 and completely feel in love with the island. I returned in February for a few weeks; however, this time, I had a really difficult time leaving. Fortunately, I've been blessed with the ability to manage my career from anywhere in the world, so I've decided to leave behind the hassle and stress of everyday life here in Canada and move to San Pedro.

Although I've only spent a minimal amount of time on the island, I met some truly wonderful people while I was there, and I'm sure I'll meet many more once I arrive to start my journey.

I will be arriving on April 2nd, just a few weeks away, and cannot wait!

Hope to bump into you once I arrive, and hey, keep the blog going strong!

    Denis

  14. Hi Carrie
i just discovered you blog today. i must say i ve really enjoyed all your stories and attitude towards life.
You really never how everything in your life will turnout, this is the beauty of it, the uncertainty.
I ve been planning my first trip to Belize by car and i have not decided if i stay in the Corazal Area or go down to placencia instead. What would you recommend. Are there any nice beaches and places in the corazal area. thanks Patrick emaildepatrick@gmail.com

    1. Hey Patrick!

Where are you driving from - that's awesome!! I considered driving my Jeep down here from PA but ended up deciding against it... just finally sold the Jeep, instead, about a year ago - I miss it!

Anway - I really havent spent much time in Corozal but I know there are a lot of ex-pats who've established a nice community up there. If you'd like a contact for that area I can get you in touch with my friends Will and Kristin - amazing people.
I love Placencia - there's a lot more to do there than in Corozal and, if you're heading south, I recommend checking out Hopkins. It's not a very far drive from Placencia - its' quite, has nice beaches, and I always thought of it as being slightly cheaper than Placencia because it isn't as built up (yet)
Actually - if you DO go to Hopkins, I may ask you to get a feel for the apartment rental situation down there - I wouldn't mind moving over to the mainland again :)

Good luck - keep in touch :)

  15. Hi Carrie,

About 2 years ago I received postcard from you, from Belize. As a postcard collector I just wanted to say one thing - Thank you! Again. :) It's been a while and I just rushed around my collections to 'accidentally' bump to mentioned card. Your are great and keep that on your mind, you made one young guy really happy back in a day. :)

    Keep smiling!

  17. Dear Carrie,

My name is Joe Pinzone and I'm casting an international travel show about expats moving abroad. We'd love to film in Belize and wanted to know if you could help us find expats who have moved there within the last 15 months or have been there for 3-4 years, but recently moved into a new home. The show documents their move to a new country and will place the country in fabulous light. The contributors on the show would also receive monetary compensation if they are filmed. If you'd like more information, please give me a call at 212-231-7716 or skype me at joefromnyc. You can also email me at joepinzone@leopardusa.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  19. Hi Carrie,

I had the pleasure of meeting you at Sandbar in early June, during happy hour...you were a delight to talk to! I'm planning an early retirement in a couple years, and I think that San Pedro might be the place for me, loved the area, but even more, loved the people. When the time comes, I'll be sailing my boat down there and I'll see if I can make AC my home base. Until then I'll probably see you again at some point, as I plan many more recon trips. Take care! - David

  20. Hi Carrie,
Wow! This is strange! I've been seriously looking at Belize for 6 mos. or so and just found your blog, and my 1st question is...

How are you working there? If I thought I could find work, I'd be there by now! I thought we could only bring jobs?

And... Born in Williamsport, I am a descendant of Henry Buck from Buck's county in the 1700s, and Bock in the old country. I also have college friends from Quakertown.

Enlighten me sista'! I ready for a new home!

    Thanx,
    geeg
